Why Is PN Listed As An Itchy Disease For 'pickers'?

A MyPrurigoTeam Member asked a question 💭

Especially when much of it is open lesions that don't heal, shards of glass feeling that won't come out, then nodule or no nodules that zing like electric lines from neuropathy? Then add the adverse effects of what sunshine, direct or indirect, does to our skin and/or makes it feel like?

I realize that but it still is disturbing to me. I thought one of the founding thoughts for physicians is to do no harm. In my opinion, I think it should be directed not only to the body but to the mind. Words in my opinion can do a lot of damage.

The person who named it "picker's nodules" never had this disease. I also feel treated like I am the one causing this horrible affliction. I keep trying to explain I am not doing this to myself, I am responding to neuropathy zings, intense pain and itching (more than a bee sting), and it is relentless. It is not a conscious decision to scratch myself bloody while I am sleeping. It is not a sudden onset mental health tic disorder, nor is it meth/opiate sores, it is a real disease that is systemic and debilitating.

Hi I'm sorry you hear that you suffer from this. I've been dealing with many if the symptoms myself for over a decade. I don't really know why it is characterized by doctors as for "Pickers" Perhaps some effected by this do that. I often scratch and that has caused the area to open and get infected. I'd suggest you ask your dermatologist as there appear to be a range of symptoms and individuals react to them in different ways.

In my 20's I had severe neuropathy to the point the tips of my fingers were dark and cold. To make a long story short I had Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (extra bone in my neck). It was misdiagnosed the first time and my first rib was removed. Two years later the symptoms returned and then the correct diagnosis was made. The extra bone in my neck was removed and I've been OK now for years. If you're having this kind of problem don't give up keep searching doc's until you find the right one. It took a hand specialist to diagnose TOS. Not many surgeons are qualified to perform this type of surgery. Do your research!!!!! I'm now 77 years young.
