Gabapentin 😱

A MyPrurigoTeam Member asked a question 💭

I believe I saw a post that mentioned using Gabapentin for nerve pain relief with this disease. I am fearful of this drug, I’ve read so many horror stories of side effects and dependency/withdrawal. I’ve avoided it for other nerve issues by my pain doc helped me understand it more and made me believe that it works, if taken as prescribed and also follow a titrate plan for discontinuing. He didn’t prescribe it for PN, it was another spine injury he wanted it used for but I’ve been curious if it’s… read more

You're most welcome. Good luck, whichever you decide. When starting and ramping up, or if a complete stop without ramping, can make me need a zombie/loony bin chair.

Thanks @Tina-Ambassador-I have yet to discuss the nerve issues in relation to Gabapentin with either, pain or derm. It was prescribed for a terrible L5 disk herniation, and I’ve only taken 1 since it was prescribed. It whacked my brain 😄😱 1 dose, 300mg did, but the doc says that side effect would stop after a certain timeframe. Certainly didn’t help me be onboard with it daily though. Yikes, I was foggy, confused and generally whacky! However I will use it more for PN if my derm recommends using it because the nerve pain included with this nodule bizness is a concern for me. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Marina ~ I've been on gabapentin for years. If taken, it must be ramped up / ramped down, not to be jumped up or off of. I've had neck/back spine issues, started gabapentin when my neck started and migraines. I haven't had the major migraines I used to have, but spine issues remain, which involves nerve issues.
It does not work like a pain medication that can hit you like a truck and leave you messed up. If taken as prescribed, ramped properly, it is a gentle dam against the nerve issues. At least that's a way for me to try and describe it.
Now PN is adding to my nerve issues in a different way, and gabapentin alone is not holding the electric zinging down for me. So I am now on Nemluvio in hopes it helps out too. Yes I am still taking gabapentin on a strict daily dose.

Some MyPrurigoTeam members have shared their experiences with gabapentin, noting that it has helped with their pain. For example, one member mentioned that taking 200 milligrams three times a day has been beneficial.

However, it's important to be aware of potential side effects, such as drowsiness and an increased risk of falls. Always follow your doctor's advice and any prescribed titration plan to minimize risks. If you have concerns, discussing them with your healthcare provider can help you make an informed decision.
